Corporate Challenge Events Impact: Our 32 Year Story

Last updated: July 2026

Corporate Challenge Events has been delivering corporate team building experiences across Australia and New Zealand since 1994.

Over 32 years, more than 771,000 people have participated in our programs, while our charity team building events have generated $3.4 million in in-kind donations for communities in need.

Today, Corporate Challenge Events is one of Australasia’s longest-established corporate team building providers and the exclusive Australasian partner of NIFPlay, the National Institute for Play.

However, the story began much more simply, with two mates, an RMIT pub crawl and an unexpected lesson about what happens when people step outside their usual roles and play together.

How the Corporate Challenge Events Story Began

In 1993, two mates from RMIT Melbourne organised a pub crawl.

It was not a business plan. It was simply a night designed to bring people together.

However, the experience revealed something neither of them expected. When people were taken out of their usual environments, away from familiar roles and given a genuine reason to have fun together, the way they connected changed.

That idea stayed with them.

A year later, in 1994, one of those two mates, Trav, was working at a hotel gym in Queensland. A conference was being held at the same hotel, and delegates kept approaching him between sessions with the same question.

Was there something the entire group could do together outside, before returning to the meeting room?

Trav created an experience for them.

He designed outdoor challenges and group activities that transformed a collection of conference delegates into a team before the formal agenda had even begun.

That was the moment the idea from the RMIT pub crawl became a business.

Corporate Challenge was born.

By 1997, the company had grown enough to officially open in Melbourne, bringing the story back to the city where the original idea had first taken shape.

A Timeline Built on Growth

From that first Queensland hotel event, Corporate Challenge Events expanded across Australia, into New Zealand and into new forms of team development.

Year Milestone
1993 The idea is born at an RMIT Melbourne pub crawl
1994 Corporate Challenge founded by Trav, at a hotel gym in Queensland
1997 Officially opens in Melbourne
2002 Expands to Western Australia
2005 Pioneers charity team building with Bikes for Tykes
2008 Expands to New Zealand
2013 Launches Conferences & Events division
2016 Launches Team Building Workshops
2026 32 years in operation, 771,174 participants and counting

The expansion into Western Australia in 2002 and New Zealand in 2008 established Corporate Challenge Events as an Australasian team building provider.

In 2013, the company launched a dedicated Conferences & Events division for organisations needing complete event programs rather than a single team activity.

Team Building Workshops followed in 2016, adding structured learning experiences such as Belbin, FISH!, Find Your Why and The Play Principles to the company’s practical, hands-on team building programs.

Over the past 32 years, Corporate Challenge Events has delivered experiences for organisations including GSK, Rio Tinto, BHP, NAB, AGL, REA Group, Bayer, QBE and KPMG, alongside thousands of other businesses and teams.

The programs have evolved, the locations have expanded and the scale has changed, but the original belief remains the same.

When people are given a meaningful opportunity to play together, supported by thoughtful program design and skilled facilitation, they can connect and work together differently.

Pioneering Charity Team Building in Australia

In 2005, Corporate Challenge Events pioneered charity team building in Australia with the launch of Bikes for Tykes.

Charity team building combines a facilitated team experience with the creation or donation of something valuable to a community organisation.

With Bikes for Tykes, teams worked together to build bicycles during their event. Those bicycles were then donated to children who had never had a bike of their own.

The program gave organisations a way to strengthen teamwork while creating a tangible community outcome that continued long after the event ended.

That original concept has since grown into more than $3.4 million in total in-kind donations, including:

  • $2.1M in bikes donated to children in need (10,500 bikes)

  • $669K in LEGO donated to disadvantaged children (6.69 million bricks)

  • $255K in toys donated to children's charities

  • $55K in Good Boxes donated to Australians sleeping rough

Across more than 5,500 charity events, approximately 251,000 participants have helped turn corporate team building budgets into meaningful support for people and communities.

To put part of that impact into perspective, 10,500 bikes lined up wheel to wheel would stretch for approximately 18 kilometres, close to the length of Manhattan from north to south.

However, the real impact is not measured only in kilometres, bricks or dollar values.

Every bike, LEGO set, toy or Good Box represents a team choosing to create something that outlasts the event itself.

Charity team building is not an optional addition to the Corporate Challenge Events story. It is one of the clearest examples of what purposeful play can achieve.

It can strengthen a team while also creating something meaningful for someone else.

The Play Philosophy Behind Corporate Challenge Events

Every number in this story points back to the same idea two mates had at a pub crawl in 1993: play, done properly, changes what happens when people get in a room together. That belief now has a name, the Play Philosophy, and a clear, stated ambition behind it: 1 million people playing by 2030.

It's not a slogan. It's the next real milestone on the same timeline above, built the same way every other milestone was, on proof that play, at scale, changes how teams work.

Corporate Challenge Events and NIFPlay

That ambition is also why Corporate Challenge became the exclusive Australasian partner of NIFPlay, the National Institute for Play, founded by Dr Stuart Brown. NIFPlay's position is that play isn't a luxury people outgrow. It's a biological necessity across the entire human lifespan, and in modern workplaces, it's often the missing performance infrastructure organisations don't realise they've designed out.

Through that partnership, Corporate Challenge translates genuine play science, the research behind connection, adaptability, and how teams respond under pressure, into practical education and experiences for Australian and New Zealand workplaces. It's the difference between believing play works and being able to show, with real research behind it, exactly why it does. You can read more about that partnership and the science behind it on our NIFPlay page.

Where We're Headed

Corporate Challenge Events is now working towards one million people playing by 2030.

Reaching that goal will build on every stage of the company’s history: the first conference group in Queensland, the expansion across Australia and New Zealand, the creation of charity team building, the launch of workshops and conferences, and the partnership with NIFPlay.

What began with two mates and a pub crawl has grown into one of Australasia’s longest-established corporate team building businesses.

The next chapter is to bring the power of play to the next 228,826 people.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do we choose the right team building activity?

We start with what is happening inside your team, not with a list of activities.

The right program depends on what you want people to experience, whether that is stronger connection, better communication, renewed energy, practical collaboration or a shared charitable purpose. Group size, location, timing and team dynamics then shape the recommendation.

What is the Trusted Play Process?

The Trusted Play Process is how Corporate Challenge Events takes an event from initial brief through to meaningful team experience.

It guides the way we understand your objectives, recommend the right program, prepare the experience, facilitate participation and connect what happened on the day back to your team.

Can the experience be tailored to our organisation?

Yes, but not by simply adding your logo to an activity.

We can shape the program around your team, conference theme, company values, leadership message or current business priorities, provided the customisation strengthens the experience rather than interrupting it.

Can Corporate Challenge Events work with large groups and conferences?

Yes. Corporate Challenge Events delivers experiences for small teams, national conferences and large corporate groups.

Programs can be structured as one shared challenge, smaller team rotations or a complete conference experience.

What is included in the Play Report?

A Play Report is provided after every Corporate Challenge Events program.

It records what unfolded during the experience, identifies patterns in communication, participation, leadership and problem-solving, and provides practical recommendations the team can apply back at work. It means the value of the event does not finish when the activity ends.

What happens if the weather changes?

Outdoor programs are planned with contingencies rather than crossed fingers.

Depending on the program and venue, we may adapt the activity, move it indoors, adjust the schedule or activate an alternative experience so the purpose of the event is not lost with the weather.
